Sorry for the long hiatus, but many changes in my life. I went to work in a state job and was laid off this past week. Please don't feel sorry for me. The many hours I worked last year (70+ per week) paid off in unemployment benefits, at least, that's what it looks like so far. I will make at least as much as I did working because I had a really high quarter. So, things looks good for the summer! I still work part time, but it is greatly diminished at this point.
Some of the things I have done in the last two+ days of time off include: cutting the grass ahead of schedule (instead of allowing it to turn into a small jungle), made an asphault patch on my driveway apron, went fishing for at least nine hours (travel included), created a delicious scalloped potato recipe (with instructions from the Mrs.), hand washed my car, cleaned out parts of the house, filed for unemployment, did a lot of shopping for the house, got a haircut, and visited with my parents. Pretty good so far, and I said at the start of this 'vacation' that I wasn't going to try to do too much. With no major pressure, this is good so far.
Anyway, in reference to old laws, I guess the laws we have addressing immigration issues do work, at least according to
this CNN story (thanks to the
Drudge Report, my news source). I am less concerned with the processing of illegals, and more with the fact they finally stuck it to those encouraging illegal immigration. I am still of the mind that there are plenty of jobs for people to do, they are just too lazy or proud to take them. I have cleaned toilets, served food, and done other less than desirable jobs in my accent of the career ladder. The illegals do those jobs too, and I don't fault them for that. I just want them to sign up as they cross the border, and, of course, pay taxed like the rest of us.
Anyways, I can't remember who the columnist was, but she was female and may write for someone down near Georgia. And she said, enforce laws on the books now, which sure sounded like a novel idea at the time. Make examples of some of these companies and others will fall into line. No one likes jail; well, at least no one should. In applying laws we already have, we demonstrate that things aren't as broke as politicians think. Makes me wonder if this all isn't a scheme to stay in office and keep us fighting with each other.
